What a format check can — and can't — tell you
A PAN is five letters, four digits and a letter. The 4th letter tells you who holds it; the 5th is the initial of the surname or entity name. Those rules catch typos and obviously fake numbers.
What it can't tell you: whether the PAN exists, whether it's active, or whether it belongs to the name you were given. Only the source can — that's what PAN Verify returns, with a 0–1 name match score.
